How Boston Rescue Mission feeds those in need with the help of a local Chick-fil-A restaurant
In Massachusetts, approximately 1 in 3 adults are food insecure, dealing with limited or uncertain access to adequate food. That number has been on the rise in the state since 2019, but Boston Rescue Mission and Chick-fil-A Copley Square in Boston are working together to tackle hunger and food insecurity in their neighborhood.
What does Boston Rescue Mission do?
Since 1899, Boston Rescue Mission (BRM) has provided food, shelter and life-transforming services for those experiencing hunger and homelessness. The nonprofit empowers at-risk community members to achieve healthy and self-sufficient lives, offering inspiration and hope for those in need throughout the city. On average, BRM houses 90 people every night, and provides 60,000 meals per year.
How does a local Chick-fil-A restaurant help?
Matt DeMichele-Rigoni, the local Owner-Operator of Chick-fil-A Copley Square in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, wants his Restaurant to serve as a beacon of support in the local community.
Multiple times per week, Matt and his Restaurant Team Members donate their Restaurant’s surplus food to Boston Rescue Mission, where extra chicken nuggets, chicken filets, biscuits and more are transformed into other dishes, like chicken parmesan and Puerto Rican dirty rice with chicken, for those in need.
“The Chick-fil-A Shared Table program has been super helpful to us,” explains Allison Kinyua, the director of finance and operations for Boston Rescue Mission. “I love the term ‘Shared Table’ because it really does mean that it’s about more than just a meal. It’s about time spent with somebody. We’ve made friendships. It’s a lot more than just food.”
“A meal, to me, is comfort,” agrees Gene, a resident at Boston Rescue Mission. “I like the fact that I’m filling my stomach – and Chick-fil-A is great food. They’ve helped out the shelter a lot.”
What impact does it have?
Together, Chick-fil-A Copley Square and Boston Rescue Mission have helped create more than 9,400 meals for those in need in Boston since their partnership began in 2022.
“The positive local impact my Chick-fil-A restaurant can create is part of the reason I do what I do,” says Matt. “I want to give back.”
Across the state, local Chick-fil-A Owner-Operators in Massachusetts have provided more than 128,000 meals through the Chick-fil-A Shared Table® program since 2012. Throughout the program’s history, more than 2,200 participating Chick-fil-A® restaurants throughout the U.S. and Canada have helped create 30 million meals to help address hunger and food insecurity in their local communities.
