An inside look at the collaboration between Food Donation Connection and the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program
Nearly three decades ago, Chick-fil-A® Owner-Operator Marshall Wilkins began donating extra food from his Restaurant to a local nonprofit to help feed those in need in the Knoxville, Tennessee community.
Not long after, Marshall connected with nearby Food Donation Connection (FDC), which links food service donors with surplus food to local hunger relief agencies. This timely connection helped pair other Chick-fil-A restaurants with local soup kitchens and shelters in their neighborhoods and eventually led to the creation of the Chick-fil-A Shared Table® surplus food donation program in 2012.
About Food Donation Connection
Since 1992, Food Donation Connection has provided support to foodservice companies by redirecting donateable, surplus food to nonprofits that can use it to provide meals in local communities – making sure that extra food goes to plates instead of landfills. In that time, FDC has coordinated the donation of over 1 billion pounds of quality, prepared food from restaurants, retailers and more from across the United States, Canada and Europe.
How FDC helps Chick-fil-A fight hunger
Through the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program, FDC identifies organizations within a 5- to 10-mile radius of a participating Chick-fil-A restaurant, coordinates donation coordination and pickup schedules, provides monthly impact reporting and more.
To date, more than 2,200 Chick-fil-A restaurants are engaged in the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program throughout the U.S. and Canada, which recently celebrated the milestone of creating more than 30 million meals for those in need.
“Chick-fil-A restaurants are known for their commitment to give back to their local communities, and the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program is a tangible representation of the impact they have,” said Brad Dietz, Director of Operations for Food Donation Connection. “It is a privilege to partner with local Chick-fil-A Owner-Operators to help them fight hunger in their neighborhoods across the United States.”
