Meet a few nonprofit partners behind our first digital cookbook

October 16, 2023

Local chefs apply creativity to feed those in need

Across the U.S. and Canada, Chick-fil-A Owner-Operators partner with over 1,200 nonprofits to rescue unused food that can be transformed into hearty meals for food insecure individuals. We’ve featured stories and recipes from several of them in our digital cookbook, Extra Helpings: Inspiring Stories and Imaginative Recipes from Chick-fil-A Shared Table®, now available for free online.

“It’s truly heartwarming to see the creativity, passion and impact of our Chick-fil-A Shared Table® partners that serve those in need in local communities,” says Brent Fielder, senior director of corporate social responsibility for Chick-fil-A, Inc. “The Extra Helpings cookbook recognizes the incredible work of these nonprofits as they help those experiencing hunger and food insecurity, and Chick-fil-A is grateful for their leadership and the opportunity to support their efforts.”

Here’s a taste of the organizations you’ll meet in the cookbook and the meals they make to creatively address food insecurity from coast to coast.

Nonprofit partners from Florida to California are making a difference

Boca Helping Hands (BHH) in Boca Raton, FL, is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2023. What began as a modest soup kitchen is now one of the largest nonprofit service providers in South Florida, feeding nearly 35,000 clients annually. Last year alone, they distributed 90,000 pantry bags and served 90,000 hot meals. In addition, they provide other services aimed at helping individuals and families improve their quality of life and build financial stability. Nosh on their Chicken Nachos.

Up the road in Mooresville, NC, Chick-fil-A Shared Table partner FeedNC serves about 225 meals each day at its Donoghue’s Open Door Community Dining Concept. They also distribute additional frozen meals weekly to veterans, children, the elderly and families in need through their Grassroots Grocery Program and Food Movers Program. Beyond prepared food, FeedNC operates Mimi’s Garden, growing fresh produce for their Grassroots Grocery program, where eligible families can receive up to $200 in free supplemental food staples each week. FeedNC also empowers education through its Culinary, Warehouse and Grocery Workforce Development programs that transform lives. You only need three basic ingredients to whip up their Fruit Smoothie

Second Story is a Chick-fil-A Shared Table partner in Northern Virginia, serving the Washington, D.C. metro area. For more than 50 years this organization has helped youth in crisis and their families with food, housing, counseling and life skills development. The nonprofit has four focus areas: residential support for teens in crisis; housing and counseling for young mothers experiencing homelessness; housing and support for teens experiencing homelessness; and Second Story in the Community, providing drop-in centers and after-school support for 2nd through 12th graders and their families. Add a little kick to your morning routine with their recipe for Spicy Queso and Eggs.

St Vinnys Bistro in San Antonio grew from the local St. Vincent de Paul Society’s ministry for those experiencing homelessness, which began in 1978. Since 2010, St Vinnys Bistro has been helping those in need by serving three hot meals daily and also distributing sack lunches around town. Currently, 12 out of their 15 employees—including their executive chef—are former meal recipients who’ve transformed their lives through counseling and received food service training that qualified them for full-time work. St Vinnys Bistro gave us a recipe for creating Sweet & Sour Nuggets from extra Chick-fil-A® nuggets.

In the Denver metro area, Chick-fil-A Shared Table partner BeyondHome is a nonprofit with a comprehensive approach to self-sufficiency for marginalized individuals and families in the community. As its name implies, it goes beyond just affordable housing, helping clients with education, career coaching, financial literacy and more. Families graduating from BeyondHome leave the program with self-sustaining careers, healthy homes and financial stability. Check out their take on Chicken Alfredo Pasta

On the West Coast, a local Chick-fil-A® restaurant partners with Project Understanding in Ventura County, CA. Similar to BeyondHome, their mission is to transform lives and empower independence by providing resources to their neighbors most at risk. Their food pantry serves over 3,200 people each month. In addition, they help clients with temporary housing and provide youth tutoring at 11 different locations across the Los Angeles metro area. Food waste impacts all of us

The release of Extra Helpings honors the collective impact of nearly 2,000 Chick-fil-A restaurants and their nonprofit partners, who have collaborated to create more than 23 million meals from donated surplus food since the inception of the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program in 2012.

Food insecurity is a growing concern—nearly every community in the U.S. and Canada has families with not enough to eat. But the irony is that food waste is also a big issue. According to Feeding America, 40% of all food in America—about 119 billion pounds—is wasted every year.
