Restaurant To Bring Approximately 120 Full- and Part-Time Jobs to Community, Honors 100 Local Heroes with Free Chick-fil-A Entrées for a Year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 20, 2024) – A new Chick-fil-A® restaurant will begin serving the Jacksonville community on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024. Chick-fil-A, Inc. has selected Melinda Sowers as the independent franchised local Owner-Operator of Chick-fil-A Atlantic & Kernan, marking her second restaurant in Jacksonville.

Located at 11909 Atlantic Blvd., Chick-fil-A Atlantic & Kernan will be open for drive-thru, carry-out, delivery and catering from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with the restaurant staying open until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Designed for speed and efficiency, this drive-thru-focused location offers added convenience to serve Guests through its drive-thru and a walk-up window for carry-out. The restaurant also features Mobile Thru, a fully dedicated lane in the drive-thru where Guests can pick up orders placed ahead of time on the Chick-fil-A App®

The Atlantic & Kernan restaurant joins more than 25 other Chick-fil-A restaurants serving the wider Jacksonville market.

Locally Owned and Operated
Chick-fil-A’s franchise model is essential to how the restaurant serves others. Most Chick-fil-A restaurants are owned and operated by a single individual, which means Chick-fil-A’s local Owner-Operators are small business owners, not passive investors, who work in their restaurants side by side with their Team Members each day.

At Chick-fil-A Atlantic & Kernan, Sowers will be responsible for all day-to-day activities of the business, including employing approximately 120 full- and part-time Team Members, serving Guests, cultivating relationships with local organizations and businesses, and tailoring philanthropic efforts to meet the Jacksonville community’s needs.

Inspired by a deep desire to make a positive impact on her community, Sowers pursued a career with Chick-fil-A, bringing more than 15 years of leadership experience in the restaurant industry with her. In 2008, she was selected as the local Owner-Operator of Chick-fil-A Atlantic & Hodges, which she will continue to operate alongside this new restaurant. For the past 16 years, Sowers and her team have been committed to serving Guests and the Jacksonville community with the highest quality of delicious food and signature hospitality. To further enhance service and the Guest experience, Chick-fil-A Atlantic & Hodges will be temporarily closed beginning Nov. 21, 2024 to rebuild the restaurant. It is scheduled to reopen in Q2 2025, pending any delays.

Opening Chick-fil-A Atlantic & Kernan will be a true full-circle moment for Sowers. When she and her husband Brian moved to Jacksonville over 20 years ago, their family lived on Kernan Boulevard and they raised their children in the neighborhood. Now, her youngest son Carson will join the new restaurant as a Team Member, while her oldest son Jacob will continue to serving on the leadership team.

Sowers is excited for many of her tenured Team Members to help her develop the next generation of young leaders in hospitality and service.

"I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue leading a team of passionate, dedicated individuals who make every day at Chick-fil-A special," Sowers said. "Our success isn’t just about serving delicious food—it’s about building relationships, both within our team and with the community we serve. Together, we strive to create a welcoming environment where our Guests feel like family, and we’re excited to keep making a positive impact.”

Caring for the Jacksonville Community
The Chick-fil-A business is built to add positive impact beyond profit, including giving back to local communities. Chick-fil-A local Owner-Operators are empowered to support the neighborhoods they serve with a key focus on hunger, education, and specific community needs.

In celebration of the opening, Chick-fil-A, Inc. has donated $25,000 to Feeding America to support local hunger relief efforts of Feeding Northeast Florida, a Feeding America partner food bank, in honor of the new restaurant.

Sowers’s restaurant is participating in the Chick-fil-A Shared Table® program, an initiative that redirects surplus food from the restaurant to local soup kitchens, shelters, food banks and nonprofits in need. To date, more than 30 million meals have been created from Chick-fil-A Shared Table donations from over 2,200 Chick-fil-A restaurants throughout the U.S. and Canada.

In addition, Chick-fil-A Atlantic & Kernan is recognizing 100 local heroes, including Dreams Come True, a Jacksonville-based organization supporting the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses, by providing them with free Chick-fil-A entrées for a year. This organization is special to the Sowers family, as it supported their oldest son Jacob, a cancer survivor, who was diagnosed at 19 months old.

Team Member Investment
Chick-fil-A local Owner-Operators strive to hire, develop and retain top talent, helping future leaders optimize their skills and providing pathways for personal and professional development in a welcoming, purpose-driven environment. A career at Chick-fil-A offers a wide range of benefits, including hands-on training and mentoring, competitive pay and benefits, the chance to apply for scholarships to support continued education, and the flexibility to thrive in and outside of work. Chick-fil-A’s local Owner-Operators are committed to preparing their team for the future, wherever it may lead. To learn more about careers at Chick-fil-A, click here
